About the Department
The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division (BSD) contains
all elements of academic medicine. Basic and translational research,
education, and patient care come together in a single campus. Its
mission is to create new knowledge of living systems, train the next
generation of leaders in biology and medicine, and advance the forefront
of health through innovative patient care. The Biological Science
Division is divided into 10 basic science and 13 clinical departments
that provide academic homes for nearly 900 full-time faculty. The BSD
Information Technology team provides advanced, secure technologies and
services to enable clinical, translational, and basic science research.
Job Summary
The DBA will be responsible for the implementation, configuration,
maintenance, and performance of our SQL Server and Oracle RDBMS systems.
The DBA will help ensure the availability and consistent performance of
our applications. The position requires solid technical skills, as well
as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the operational
readiness of the database instances (security, health and performance),
executing data loads, and deploying application code.
Responsibilities
- Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle
environments, from development to production systems.
- Manage Oracle database instances on Linux.
- Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including
monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels
of performance, availability, and security.
- Analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem
resolution end-to-end.
- Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document
changes
- Assist developers with query tuning and schema refinement.
- Install and configure SSRS reporting instances.
- With moderate direction from others, analyzes the users\'
requirements and solves routine database problems that ensures users
and related applications can access necessary data sets.
- Defines and interprets existing data and populates the database with
new data from external sources. Plans own resources such as
documentation on data models, data dictionaries, physical database
configuration, and daily database maintenance functions.
- Participates in the development of queries and retrieval systems.
- Monitors the database storage system used to securely store and
organize datasets.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related
field.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Familiar with Oracle Database Administration.
- Familiar with Linux OS.
- Familiar with ksh scripting.
- Familiar with Windows Administration.

- Independent problem-solving.
- Strong communication skills involving translating complex technical
terminology and functional processes into layman\'s terms.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid remote and occasional in-person (subject to change per
university policy).
- Daily team scrum (virtual).
- Occasional deployment activities after business hours.
