Position Summary/Description:

Hybrid: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement which may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned work location.

The Financial Accounting Unit within the Accounting Services department plays a crucial role in maintaining and overseeing the university’s financial records, and ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and compliance. This team is responsible for managing the central financial accounting system that supports all university operations, including maintaining the university’s official book of records, auditing financial transactions, tracking funding and spending, developing accounting models and tools, providing accounting services and training, evaluating and enhancing internal controls, and generating reports of institutional trust funds. This position will be the primary individual responsible for auditing and approving complex financial transactions that have a significant impact on our university’s financial statements. This position will perform detailed audit and analysis of campus correcting journal entries and prepaid card reconciliation journal entries. This position will examine a variety of accounting documents, including Source Fund Authority, determine allowability of charges to state funds, F&A funds, and institutional trust funds, and verify conformance to pertinent university policies, procedures and accounting standards, such as General Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board ( GASB ) standards. This position will develop and implement control systems for determining and distributing prepaid card costs, work with prepaid card system administrators and Office of Vice Chancellor Research to develop and evaluate accounting models, and ensure financial data are accurately recorded in our financial accounting systems, This position will lead training for campus users regarding campus journals, respond to inquiries relating to financial transactions, advocate best practices, and provide interpretation of accounting principles and university policies. Other duties also include assisting campus departments to reconcile accounting transactions between InfoPorte reports and PeopleSoft. This position performs financial analysis of general ledger transactions and reconciles general ledger, accounts payable, and external system transactions, and resolving discrepancies. This position will prepare financial reporting and interpretations, perform analysis of accounting records, create KPI and matrix reports, and have responsibilities for month-end, year-end closing tasks, and other assigned projects. This position is responsible for developing new campus journal templates and accounting procedures, implementing system and procedural changes, promoting best practices, and providing training and accounting services to central office users.

Education and Experience:

Previous accounting work experience in higher education is preferred. Intermediate level in Microsoft Excel and Word is preferred.
