Summary:

The System Chief Nursing Executive is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading nursing through matrixed relationships, across the healthcare system. This position has responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing research activities. Provides consultation services to other departments and entities within the health system. The System Chief Nursing Executive will be a recognized thought leader within UNC Health in areas including but not limited to:

  • Nursing practice

  • Hospital quality improvement

  • Workforce development

  • Magnet certification and re-certification

  • Nursing education and research

The System CNE will be a knowledgeable and engaged leader to entity CNOs across the organization, as well as be an effective subject matter expert on nursing issues when working with C-suite leadership at hospital and physician entities as well as at the system level.

The System CNE will manage Nursing Operations, Inpatient Experience, and AdvancedCare@Home (hospital at home), through a matrixed relationship structure.

The System CNE will report to the System COO and will also have an appointment with the UNC School of Nursing as Associate Dean for Nursing Practice.

Responsibilities:

  1. Direct clinical and administrative operations; oversee development and implementation of plans, operations, and programs across nursing. Develops and implements objectives, policies and procedures.

  2. Provide oversight and direction in establishing and maintaining a system for developing, reviewing, approving, disseminating, and assuring the quality of standards of clinical practice.

  3. Assure effective communication and coordination of initiatives among various councils and committees with the health care system, the nursing infrastructure and other hospital medical staff committee councils, and work groups.

  4. Provide oversight and direction to the clinical service units in developing specialty practice councils within the organization and establish departmental direction consistent with hospital and health system strategic plan and objectives.

  5. Prepares clinical annual report, plans for and ensures competent care for patient and families and develop/monitor programs to facilitate meeting goals of department, hospital, and health system.

  6. Assist in leading system wide strategic planning process, business development in collaboration with the senior leadership team. Participates in the effective utilization of balanced scorecards to connect entity level activity to the system strategic plan.

  7. Directs the deployment of resources to effectively manage strategic relationships with key physicians. Activity includes Collaboration with the Physicians Relations Liaison and staff in the development of operational plans to support physician engagement strategies.

  8. Foster positive relationships with key members of medical staff, hospitals, employed physicians, employees to solicit input and collaborate with them on strategy development and implementation of clinical programs, business and service line programs, procedures, and plans.

  9. Incorporate market leading trends in all levels of the strategic planning process. Track and maintain an awareness of market trends in the healthcare, research, regulatory environment to identify threats and opportunities in the competitive landscape. Work closely with Senior Executive team and consultants for the Certificate of Need process and incorporate regulatory issues into strategic plan. Remain current on CON issues that affect the organization and assists in reporting to leadership on competitive activity.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Master’s degree required.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina or ability to obtain.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a minimum of twelve (12) years of nursing leadership experience within a complex health system, preferably an academic health system, with at least ten (10) years of management experience. Including a minimum of 3 years of experience as a CNO at one or more medium to large hospitals.

  • History of engagement with AONL and other national professional organizations is preferred. History of research/publication in nursing practice and related fields preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

The CNE should have demonstrated experience/expertise across the care continuum (inpatient, procedural, outpatient, post-acute) and should be able to apply that expertise to proactively explore, develop, and champion new models of care that will enhance patient safety and experience, staff recruitment and retention, and operational/financial efficiency. Ability to articulate a clear vision for nursing excellence, fostering innovation, and driving strategic initiatives. Leading and building high-performing teams, fostering collaboration with diverse stakeholders across departments. Staying current with healthcare regulations and ensuring compliance within the nursing department. Championing patient safety initiatives and implementing quality improvement programs. Building trust and open communication with nurses, physicians, executives, and board members. Understanding and appreciating diverse patient populations and fostering a culturally sensitive work environment.
