The Dean of Students serves as a member of the Donald Ralph Cooke Schools administrative team and assists with the daily operation of the school, specifically in the areas of attendance, behavioral, and disciplinary prevention, and intervention services. The Dean of Students needs to embrace an inclusive philosophy and demonstrate experience or willingness to train for the implementation of Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) methods. The Dean of Students will act as direct supervisor to the Assistant to Dean of Students and any other staff assigned to them by the Director of Education. Other activities and responsibilities may be delegated by the Director of Education.

The Dean of Students is directly responsible to the Director of Education. The Dean of Students will be in charge of administrative duties in the absence of the Director of Education.

This position is not eligible for overtime pay.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Provides individual student counseling and informs the Director of Education as to each youths progress with behavior change.
  2. Maintains a working knowledge of the equipment and teaching materials utilized in the program and serves as an emergency substitute teacher when needed.
  3. Assists the Director of Education in evaluating and ordering necessary educational materials and related supplies within budgetary limitations.
  4. Assist teachers with behavior management plans and strategies and serves as facilitator of after school behavioral intervention programs when needed.
  5. Ensures cleanliness and maintenance of the academic areas; and promptly reports any needed maintenance and repairs.
  6. Maintains accurate records and other necessary administrative duties including documentation of behavior in school data system, contacting parents about behavior, and reporting incidents in ECHO.
  7. Responsible for attending and participating in staff meetings, team meetings, government mandated training, and in-service training sessions.
  8. Responsible for behavioral management and disciplinary actions as needed.
  9. Responsible for ensuring a schedule and substitute is in place when teachers are absent.
  10. Serve as key member of TBRI implementation team, make recommendations for advancing implementation and coordinate/lead staff development activities related to TBRI implementation.
  11. Performs and documents all safety drills including fire drills, weather drills, and any other safety drill deemed necessary for the safety of the students.
  12. Responsible for supervision and grading of On-the-Job Training students (OJT) and responsible for monitoring morning drop off and afternoon pick up for all students.
  13. Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS A bachelors degree or higher is required for this position. A degree in Education, Social Work or a related field is preferred. At least 2 years teaching experience, or 2 years of experience working with at-risk youth and behavioral intervention in a residential care setting, and at least two years of experience in management or supervision, is preferred.

  1. Must have the ability to communicate utilizing verbal and written skills.
  2. Must have the ability to establish and maintain warm, consistent relationships with youth, parents and/or guardians, and other Youth Ranches personnel.
  3. Must have the ability to train others and coach staff performance on an individual, one-on-one basis, as well as in presentation to groups of varying size .
  4. Must have knowledge and appreciation of spiritual values and the ability to develop moral and ethical values in youth.
  5. Must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical requirements described are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, hear, and talk extensively. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS Working conditions for this job may include outdoor weather conditions and working near mechanical moving parts. Work is generally performed in a classroom environment.

BASE SALARY$45,760 Annually
