Description

Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Director of Nursing, Nursing Professional Development Specialist is responsible for leading professional development initiatives to promote clinical practice and evidence-based practice within Fenway Health. The Nursing Professional Development Specialist will implement Evidence Based Practice changes through policy and education to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies as well as the Fenway Health Strategic Goals for Nursing. The Nursing Professional Development Specialist will include Fenway Health’s Racial Equity Action Plan (REAP) principles as well as the Building the Best Workplace Culture pillars in all their activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Professional Development

  • Assesses, plans, develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive education programs to meet the orientation, ongoing competency needs, training, and professional developments needs of the Nursing Department staff.

  • Ensures all educational programs meet departmental as well as regulatory expectations and standards.

  • Utilizes adult educational theory and leaning principles to provide educational experiences and training materials for staff.

  • Develops and delivers/coordinates other educational programs as directed (e.g.: specialty focused, departmental meetings, in-services, continuing education, etc.)

  • Researches, develops, and supports implementation of new initiatives impacting clinical practice.

  • Facilitate development of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, effective communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration among staff

  • Assists in onboarding of new hires and manages educational resources

  • Oversees and ensures the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing education services in collaboration with nursing leadership

  • Assists in the development of clinical policies, procedures, guidelines and order sets to promote nursing practice within the scope of nursing

  • Coordinates and assists with the presentation of mandatory education and tracking completion to support supervisory nurses responsible for ensuring completion adherence

  • Works in concert with nursing department leadership to ensure all reoccurring training and competencies/assessment are completed

  • Participates in development and implementation of nursing process improvement plans and quality measurements

  • Supports academic partnerships and oversees nursing student placement in clinical rotations

  • Support Nursing department clinical needs/ duties as assigned

Research

  • Integrates relevant research outcomes into nursing professional development practice through effective learning activities

  • Supports integration of research into practice and helps develop staff members’ knowledge and skills in the research process

  • Stays abreast of and incorporates current research and best practices into nursing education practice and policies

Program Support

  • Assists in development and support of Fenway Health’s model of professional nursing practice

  • Provides guidance, resources, and knowledge for professional growth of others

  • Participates in strategic planning as assigned

  • Demonstrates skill in navigating and communicating in a complex environment.

  • Works with Nursing Leaders to identify Nursing Sensitive Indicators and other KPIs.

  • Fosters achievement of Nursing Education/Development goals and objectives

  • Accepts committee and workgroup appointments and actively participates to affect change in patient care.

  • Promotes high-quality patient care by promoting evidence-based practice models which enhances and increases professional nursing practice.

  • Promotes and cultivates positive relationships with academic programs to foster positive image and relationships to promote accessible and supportive connections with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty.

  • Works with Human Resources to ensure Fenway Health is recurring value add staff for various levels of Nursing Department staff.

  • Engages with and promotes respectful communication between interdisciplinary teams.

  • Maintains proficiency in clinical areas and serves as a resource and role model for nurses and students.

  • Participates in planning, implementing, and monitoring nursing goals and objectives consistent with the Fenway Health Strategic Plan and Fenway Health Nursing Strategic Plan

  • Participates and leads education committee

  • Works alongside clinical nurses as needed to support patient care

Requirements

  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible nursing experience with at least 2 years in a nurse educator or equivalent leadership role required.

  • Experience and demonstrated competence in planning, developing, implementing and directing educational programs for adults in the nursing field required.

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • Proficiency in the use of the computer and associated software (i.e., MS products, Electronic Health Record (EHR) software) is required.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work harmoniously with others in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment is required.

  • Authentic interest in LGBTQIA+ and community health is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

  • Nursing Professional Development (NPD-BC) Board Certification

  • Five (5) years of experience in ambulatory, hospital, or public health nursing.

  • Experience with working within a complex healthcare system with multiple product lines.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This is a union position in a Fenway Health bargaining unit represented by 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

Salary Description

$36.67-45.85/hr ($38,136.85-$47,684.00/year)
