GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Performs inspection of fire alarm systems. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Within the five (5) years preceding application, individual should have a minimum of one and one-half (1 1/2) years experience in the installation, repair or testing of fire alarm systems. Educational courses and special training courses may be substituted for experience. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS For applications, procedures, and schedule of examinations, contact the regulatory agency. Examinations are scheduled on a quarterly basis. Type examination; written (open book) based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) publications, the Kentucky Building Code (KBC) and "The Kentucky Fire Prevention Code - Standards of Safety". Practical examination given on system(s) simulator(s). Passing score on written examination is 70% and satisfactory on practical examination. Examination fee is $25.00 per examination. Applicants who do not achieve a score of 70% or higher but do score more than 50% will be allowed to retake the examination the next test cycle upon application to do so. Those individuals who attain a score of less than 50% must wait a minimum of six (6) months (two test cycles) to reapply for the examination. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION Each successful applicant is issued an identification card (ID) card with their assigned inspector's number. This number must be entered on all inspection reports. A copy of the completed report must be forwarded to the State Fire Marshal's Office, (Fire Protection Systems) within fourteen (14) days of the inspection. The reports will be reviewed for completeness. Reports found to be deficient will be investigated. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Inspectors must make every effort to keep abreast of changes in technology, codes and regulations concerning fire alarm systems.
