Electricians must be licensed in Idaho. There are four certificates of competency available to electricians: Electrical Apprentice registration, Journeyman Electrician license, Master Electrician license, and Electrical Contractor license. Journeyman Electrician Applicants must: 1.) Document a minimum of 8,000 hours of work experience as an Idaho Electrical Apprentice; 2.) Complete four (4) years of approved electrical apprenticeship school; 3.) Pass an exam. Specialty licenses are available in the areas of: Elevator; Sign; Manufacturing/Assembling; Limited Energy; Irrigation Sprinkler; Well Driller/Pump Installer; Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning; Outside Wireman (Lineman); and Photovoltaic (Solar) Installer. Specialty Journeyman Electrician Applicants must: 1.) Document a minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience as an Idaho Electrical Apprentice; 2.) Pass an exam. Term: Licenses are valid for three years before renewal.
