License: Contractor

• Licensing requirements exist for public and private construction contracts exceeding $50,000 and for commercial construction. Also, projects consisting of more than two single residential homes or more than one single residential duplex, triplex, or fourplex require licensing. • Must complete an application, and take the Business, Law, and Trade exam. For the examination a passing grade of 70 to 75 percent (depending on the exam) is required. Applicants must have a net worth of $10,000. • Must show 4 hours of continuing education in order to renew license. NONRESIDENT REQUIREMENTS • Nonresident contractors must obtain a Certificate of Authority from the Secretary of State. Nonresident contractors and subcontractors must register with the Department of Revenue and Taxation if the contract is in excess of $3,000. • The contractor shall also post a bond or other surety in the minimum of $1,000.
